Mac users can finally get a taste of Microsoft's new Office suite, set for release later this year.

The Office 2016 for Mac preview launched on Thursday, with access to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote.

'Office 2016 for Mac shares an unmistakably Office experience—but is also thoughtfully designed to take advantage of the unique features of the Mac,' Kirk Koenigsbauer, corporate vice president for the Office 365 Client Apps and Services team, wrote in a blog post.
The new apps, he explained, come with Retina display support, full-screen view, and 'even little Mac affordances' like scroll bounce, Koenigsbauer added.
Despite the familiar word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation services, Redmond promises a modernized experience that makes it easier to get things done.
'The moment you open any one of the apps, you'll immediately feel the difference,' Koenigsbauer wrote, touting a redesigned ribbon, refreshed task pane interface, and new themes and styles.
'Office 2016 for Mac is powered by the cloud so you can access your documents on OneDrive, OneDrive for Business and SharePoint at anytime, anywhere and on any device,' the company said.
Microsoft teased the next-generation Office desktop suite in January, promising the same comprehensive apps you know, but with an up-to-date twist—including Office 'universal apps.'
Apple computer owners can download the updated apps today; don't forget to share your thoughts by 'sending a smile' from the top corner of the screen. User feedback will be integrated into the finalized product, expected for release later this summer.
'It's not only full of new and improved features, it's another proof point of our commitment to cross-platform support and a consistent experience across devices,' Koenigsbauer said. 'Unmistakably Office, but thoughtfully designed for the Mac.'
Accessible alongside Office for Mac 2011, the preview build—to be updated regularly—will continue functioning for about a month after Microsoft's official launch.
To install, ensure that you've downloaded the build, then copy it to your desktop. Follow the installation prompts, and close the installer window once complete. The relevant apps can then be found in your Mac's Applications folder (Finder > Menu > Applications).
The Office 2016 for Mac preview can also be uninstalled at any time. Navigate to the Applications folder and find each app you want to delete, then drag it to the trash, and empty the bin.
Introduction: How to Install Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac for Free
Microsoft has put out the free download of Office 2016 for Mac public preview, without any Office 365 subscription required. The new software includes support for Retina displays, iCloud syncing, and looks like the versions of Office currently available on Windows and mobile.

Step 1: Download the Install
Once you download the 2.6GB file to your downloads folder, click on the Office Preview Package to get started. You will be guided through the necessary steps to install this software.
Tip: I had to upgrade my OS X because you can't install Office for Mac with any version of OS X below 10.10. To see my tutorial on how to upgrade your OS X go here.
I also had some internet interruptions on my initial download to my downloads folder and had a hard time opening the package because it did not download the full 2.6GB. Make sure that you fully downloaded the package.
Step 2: Read and Agree to Licensing Agreement
The software license agreement comes in many languages, this one in English. Once you read the agreement, you will have scrolled to the bottom. Click continue to agree.

Step 3: Agree to the License Agreement to Begin Installation
You will then be prompted to agree. Once you do you will select what users of your computer will have access to the software to select the destination for install. You will need 5.62GB of free space to install. Select and click continue.
Step 4: Install Office for Mac
I want all users of my computer to be able to access Office and made sure to have the available space. Now I am ready to install. I click install. I had to wait a few moments for the installation to complete. Then I was notified that the installation was successful. And my installation is complete.
